Nicholas Owusu Adjei (Nico) is sixteen years old and hopes to be a doctor on eday. Nico is from Asante Bekwai in the Ashanti region of Ghana, but lives with his father at New Aplaku, a low-income community in Ghana’s capital city, Accra. Nico’s father is a farmer who practices subsistence farming and there is not enough income at home for him to be taken care of. Nico has been selling dog chains on the streets of Accra to raise enough money to pay his school fees, and life has often been unbearable for Nico.
